Abstract

The Brazilian penitentiary system faces serious structural deficiencies, evidenced by overcrowding, high levels of violence, and inadequate living conditions for inmates. In this context, this article aims to examine how the principle of human dignity is violated within the country’s prison system. To this end, data regarding the incarcerated population will be presented, along with discussions on the legal frameworks governing penal execution. In addition, representative cases of human rights violations within prison units will be analyzed. Finally, possible measures will be suggested to mitigate the challenges faced by the system, with the goal of ensuring respect for the principle of human dignity.
